“listen to the band” “I remember watching the Monkees TV show reruns with my older brother, jumping around the room when the musical segments came on. One episode had an Archie Bunker type character who referred to the group as 'just some scruffy rock and roll band.'I had heard the expression before, but at that moment, I realized what rock and roll was, and I already knew I liked it. Compared to other Monkees’ songs, there’s just something different about Listen to the Band. It’s country-psychedelia groove, heavy brass section, "live" ending, and strange breakdown in the middle are not the marks of Tin Pan Alley tunesmiths. Instead, Mike Nesmith had crafted a poignantly self-referential sound collage with his unique cinematic perspective. It stands today as the one missing link between Last Train to Clarksville and their space-out movie Head. -Floyd Next: look out, here comes Bikeride ©2000-2001 Planting Seeds Records.
